What Is Cancer?

Cancer is a term used to describe a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the body. Normally, cells grow, divide, and die in a controlled manner, but in cancer, this process is disrupted. Cancerous cells can form tumors, invade nearby tissues, and metastasize to other parts of the body.

There are over 100 different types of cancer, each classified based on the type of cell or tissue where it originates. Some common types of cancer include breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, and skin cancer.

Facts About Cancer

According to World Health Organization, Cancer remains a pressing global health issue, claiming nearly 10 million lives in 2020 and accounting for approximately one in six deaths worldwide. There are several prevalent types of cancer, such as breast, lung, colon and rectum, and prostate cancers. It is noteworthy that a significant portion of these fatalities, around one-third, can be attributed to modifiable lifestyle choices. These options encompass tobacco use, obesity, alcohol consumption, an unhealthy diet, and a lack of physical activity. Approximately 30% of cancer cases in low- and lower-middle-income nations are caused by infections like human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis. Thankfully, there is cause for optimism: early detection and effective treatment can lead to positive outcomes in many cases, emphasizing the importance of proactive healthcare and comprehensive measures and awareness campaigns (Cancer, 2022).
